about
The lyrics in one of the sacred blues canon’s most noted songs reminds me of the Sunday school stories of my youth. John, the youngest apostle, penned one of Christ’s biographies and several other New Testament books, including the apocalyptic Revelation. Historic blues Jedi including Blind Willie Johnson, Son House and Sister Rosetta Tharpe covered it, among scores of other artists. I’m partial to Gov’t Mule’s version.
lyrics
Tell me who’s that writing, John the Revelator
Tell me who’s that writing, John the Revelator
Who’s that writing, John the Revelator
Wrote the Book of the Seven Seals
Now God walked out in the cool of the day
Called Adam by his name
But he refused to answer
‘Cause he was naked and ashamed
Now Christ had twelve apostles
And three he led away
He said, “Watch for me one hour
While I go yonder and pray.”
Now Mary and Martha, they were there
And they heard every word he say
He said, “Go tell my disciples
I said meet me in Galilee.”
So tell me who’s that writing, John the Revelator
Tell me who’s that writing, John the Revelator
Who’s that writing, John the Revelator
Wrote the Book of the Seven Seals
