about
William “Cat-Iron” Carradine’s version of this traditional song is ideally representative of the rich, diverse catalog of American sacred music. In it, I hear the lament of a broken man whose knowledge of his own fundamental need trusts only a single solution: that God will heal him. Frederic Ramsey Jr., who originally recorded Cat-Iron in Nachez, Mississippi, in 1958, said that he might be singing religion, but he plays it with the heart of a blues-man.
lyrics
Lord, fix me right, Lord fix me right
If I die on the battlefield, Lord, fix me right
Good Lord, fix me right, Lord, fix me right
If I die, oh let me die, Lord, fix me right
When I was a sinner, I know this too well
When I come to find out I was on my road to hell
Good Lord, fix me right, Lord, fix me right
If I die on the battlefield, Lord, fix me right
I’m coming but the way is hard, coming but the way is hard
If I die on the battlefield, coming but the way is hard
Oh please fix me right, please fix me right
If I die on the battlefield please fix me right
I’m going out in your name, going out in your name
If I die on the battlefield, going out in your name
Oh please fix me right, please fix me right
If I die, oh let me die, please fix me right
Oh fix me right
Oh, Jesus done fixed me right
I’m coming on my bended knee, coming on my bended knee
If I die on the battlefield, coming on my bended knee
Good Lord, fix me right, Lord, fix me right
If I die on the battlefield, Lord, fix me right
Lord fix me, Lord fix me right
Come on fix me, good God fix me
